On August 30, 2024, the Nueva Ecija University of Science and Technology (NEUST) hosted the 3rd Young Journalists Press Freedom Congress (YJPFC) at the Mini-Convention Center, Sumacab Campus, coinciding with National Press Freedom Day. This also marked NEUSTโs inaugural role as host for this significant congress, bringing together over 400 student journalists from various higher education institutions (HEIs) across Central Luzon.
The congress featured a series of workshops led by six veteran journalists, covering key areas essential for modern journalism such as digital arts, social media management, video production, branding and design, mobile journalism, and investigative writing. These sessions aimed to equip participants with advanced skills and knowledge, adapting to the evolving media landscape while upholding ethical journalism standards.
In her keynote address, Engr. Feliciana P. Jacoba, NEUSTโs Vice President for Academic Affairs, emphasized the vital role of journalists in guiding society toward truth and justice. She urged the student journalists to use their platforms responsibly, advocating for free thought and societal progress, while recognizing their significant role in shaping a just and informed future.
Guest of Honor, Ms. Jacque Manabat, highlighted the importance of accuracy and credibility in journalism. She stressed the need for thorough source verification and ethical reporting, reinforcing the congress’s focus on maintaining high journalistic standards.
Mr. Jeffrey C. Cabal, President of ATSPAR III Inc., expressed gratitude to the participants and acknowledged the progress of student publications under ATSPAR IIIโs leadership in the digital era. He emphasized the collaborative efforts necessary to advance campus journalism.
Reflecting on ATSPAR III’s journey, founding officer Dr. Felocia M. Alegado shared the challenges faced and the resilience required to overcome them. She stressed the importance of adhering to the journalism code of ethics and encouraged students to value the guidance of their advisers.
NEUST President Dr. Rhodora R. Jugo concluded the congress with appreciation and encouragement. She commended the advancements in student journalism and urged participants to innovate, inspire, and uphold the truth. Dr. Jugo highlighted their responsibility in combating misinformation and mentoring the next generation of journalists.
Meanwhile, NEUSTโs official student publication, The Blaze, made history by securing third place overall in the Best A-List Campus Media in Central Luzon, winning 17 awards across various categories. NEUSTโs Gabaldon and San Isidro campuses also excelled, with The Boulders and Anihan collectively winning nine awards.
The 3rd YJPFC celebrated student journalism achievements while reinforcing journalism’s vital role in promoting truth and integrity. It served as a crucial platform for learning, collaboration, and a commitment to ethical reporting.
