NEUST COEd hosts immersion program for learners with special needs
Sumacab Campus – The Nueva Ecija University of Science and Technology (NEUST) College of Education (COEd) welcomed students with special needs from Big Steps Center for Special Education and Child Development Inc. for a field immersion visit on March 19, 2025.
Accompanied by their parents, students aged 12 and above explored basic office tasks and workplace environments through an initiative designed to provide hands-on learning experiences in professional settings while reinforcing the importance of inclusive education.
Dr. Jo Neil Peria, Dean of the College of Education, reaffirmed NEUST COEd’s commitment to accessible education for all learners by highlighting the role of the university’s Bachelor of Special Needs Education (BSNEd) program in empowering students with special needs through immersive and experiential learning opportunities.
Dr. Donna D. De Guzman, Chairperson of the Bachelor of Elementary Education (BEEd) program, emphasized the shared advocacy of NEUST COEd and Big Steps in promoting inclusivity, highlighting that collaborative efforts like the immersion program help bridge educational gaps and create meaningful opportunities for learners with special needs.
Big Steps School Director Mr. Raymond E. Raguindin expressed gratitude for NEUST COEd’s continuous support in fostering inclusive learning experiences while encouraging BSNEd students to remain dedicated to their studies, emphasizing their crucial role in advancing special education.
As part of the visit, students toured key university facilities for first hand exposure to real-world learning environments, including the University Library, Campus Head Librarian Nanette Lucas and her staff introduced them to library operations and personnel responsibilities; the University Infirmary, where University Physician Dr. Margarita Belinda V. Gamilla and her staff provided insights into healthcare services; and the dental clinic, where university dentist Dr. Eugene M. Partoza discussed dental care and conducted brief oral examinations.
The learners visited the Institute of Physical Education (IPE), where they observed classes and engaged in physical activities led by faculty members, before concluding their tour at the University Museum, where Dr. Ofelia Bawan, Head of the Learning and Development Office and Museum Curator, guided them through interactive exhibits.
The immersion program reinforced NEUST COEd’s dedication to inclusivity and experiential learning, leaving a lasting impact on both learners and educators by broadening students’ knowledge and strengthening the university’s commitment to fostering a more inclusive and supportive educational environment.
