In line with its commitment to promoting innovation and research commercialization, the Nueva Ecija University of Science and Technology (NEUST), through its Graduate School (GS) and Innovation Management Office (IMO), conducted a training workshop on Intellectual Property (IP) Awareness and Technology Transfer on September 13 and 20, 2025.
The event was attended by alumni of the Graduate School who expressed interest in registering their research projects and technologies with the Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines (IPOPHL).
In her message, NEUST President Dr. Rhodora Jugo emphasized the value of the university’s role in fostering innovation amid challenges.
“Amidst all of this chaos, the university is doing something positive—not only for the institution but also for the community,” she said.
She further encouraged participants to take part in the realization of the true essence of the Bagong Pilipino and Bagong Pilipinas, noting that while the mission is great, collective efforts that begin within the university can make a meaningful difference.
Graduate School Dean Dr. Jocelyn Cruz acknowledged the invaluable guidance of research advisers and highlighted the positive impact that research-based technologies could bring to communities.
Dr. Cruz also underlined the vital role that inventors play in addressing local needs through innovation and knowledge transfer.
Joining virtually, Ts.Dr. Nallaluthan Kesavan, an Associate Professor from Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) in Malaysia, presented best practices in international intellectual property management, offering global insights into how universities can successfully navigate the IP landscape.
Dr. Edgelly Vitug, Head of the Innovation Management Office, and Engr. Emmanuel Borre, Project Manager of NEUST IMO, presented the detailed process of applying for intellectual property registration through the IPOPHL, and shared information on the institutional processes and support mechanisms available for alumni-inventors who wish to register their technologies with NEUST.
Meanwhile, Dr. Allen Paul Esteban, Chair of Research, Extension, and Training at the Graduate School, explained the key provisions of institutional agreements related to intellectual property—encouraging alumni-inventors to take full advantage of the university’s support system in protecting and eventually commercializing their research outputs.
As a host institution of an Innovation and Technology Support Office (ITSO) under the nationwide program of the IPOPHL, NEUST plays a vital role in fostering a culture of innovation within the academic and research community.
This initiative seeks to strengthen the creation and protection of intellectual property, particularly in the areas of inventions and utility models, with the ultimate goal of enhancing the country’s innovation output and increasing the global presence of Filipino-developed technologies in the international patent system.
The training workshop was also attended by key NEUST officials, including Dr. Jean Guillasper, Vice President for Research, Extension, and Training; Dr. Marilou Pascual, Director of the Training Department; Dr. Marivic Villegas, Director of the Extension Department, along with faculty advisers from the Graduate School.
